Name of creator Newberry, Percy Edward (1869-1949).

Administrative and biographical history
British Egyptologist and botanist. Born, Islington, London 1868. Died, Godalming 1949. Educated at King's College School, then King's College, London. Studied botany and archaeology. Involved with the Egypt Exploration Fund (later Society) from early on in its history, eventually becoming its Vicepresident. Worked with Petrie at Hawara and Kahun in 1889-90. Led the Archaeology Survey expedition to Beni Hasan and el-Bersha, 1890-4. Surveyed the Theban Necropolis as well as supervising excavations there on behalf of various sponsors. Brunner Professor of Egyptology, Liverpool, 1906-19, Hon. Reader in Egyptian Art, Liverpool, 1919, Fellow, King's College, London, 1908. Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology, Cairo University, 1929-33. Published a large volume of material in various periodicals as well as many monographs.

Custodial history The estate of P. E. Newberry.

Immediate source of acquisition 1. All papers (except those mentioned in group 2) given by Newberry's widow via Mr W. Dawson, in 1951. 2. Three notebooks in the possession of Mr W. Dawson, in 1960.
