The papers of Jac. J. Janssen (1922-2011) in the Griffith Institute

Professor Jac. J. Janssen (1922-2011) was a prolific author, conscientious Egyptologist, and authority on hieratic texts, especially those from Deir el-Medina. His wife, Dr Rosalind Janssen, presented his papers to the Griffith Institute in 2011.

Professor Janssen's papers include research notes for many of his publications and conference papers. They also contain transcriptions of hieratic ostraca and papyri from various museums. Of particular significance, and demonstrating his meticulous working methods, are the detailed year lists he compiled from the ostraca from Deir el-Medina, as illustrated in the figure below.

This material is available for consultation, and Dr Leire Olabarria prepared the catalogue.

We are also grateful to Dr Gill Woods, the copyright owner of the photograph of Professor Janssen riding a bicycle in Luxor.
