211 CALCITE COSMETIC JAR

POSITION: (?) original. Just within the folding doors of the great outer shrine and resting upon the ground. The recumbent lion faced the door.

DIMENSIONS: Max. H. 26.8, H. of jar from ground 17.7, diam. of jar 12.0, centimetres.

DESCRIPTION: Cylindrical shaped jar of calcite of various qualities. The jar is flanked with lotus columns which support heads of the god Bes with long protruding ivory tongues stained red. The calcite lid of the jar, circular in shape with projections for hinge and fastening, has upon it a recumbent lion, modelled in the round, with forepaws crossed and long protruding tongue of ivory stained red. The eyes are gilt with details painted black. The eyebrows, claws, end of tail and cartouche of the King upon the body, are painted with dark green paint. <> The exterior surface of the cylindrical jar has a decoration slightly incised and filled in with pigment - red, green and dark blue. The ornament comprises two hunting scenes (back and front) between garland (top) and panel (bottom) ornament. Front scene: a lion and a hound attacking a bull, two hounds
