The First (innermost) Shrine. No. 239.

A gilded wood shrine closely fitted over and completely enclosing the sarcophagus.

Oblong in shape, it has a roof of barrel-vault form abutting upright end pieces, a cavetto cornice, a torus moulding, frieze, panels, and dado, corner posts forming the styles, and in place of a skirting the lower edges are bound with sheet copper painted(?) a dark greenish-blue (see Alex. Scott II, p. 205 ff).

Dimensions at base - 290.5 x 161.5 cents. Extreme edges of cornice - 309 x 181 cents. Total height - 192 cents; height from ground to spring of cornice - 152 cents. Opening of doorway - 131 cents high; 121.5 cents wide. Door leaf, 130 x 60 cents. The four sides show a batter (i.e. have a receding
