311. MODEL BOAT (SOLAR BARK) (See No. 307) (See 285, 286) 1

POSITION: S.E. corner of chamber; resting on black shrine-like chest (No. 295); bows towards west.

DIMENSIONS: L. overall (i.e., the longer axis of the boat) 149; Max. beam 27.3; Max. depth 13, cents. Throne: Max. H. 21; seat 12.5; W. 12.5; depth 12.5, cents.

DESCRIPTION: Representing a kind of light craft of primitive form, of the type developed from the raft or perhaps reed float, bottom round, under bow and stern flattened, capable of navigating shallow water with minimum draught and maximum load; reminding one of the Venetian gondola in shape.

Made out of several logs of wood pieced together and shaped and planed with an adze.

Bow and stern turned up: the two ends rising in a curved line; the stem curved upwards ending in an upright lotus shaped ornament, the stern bent back and ending in an upright lotus shaped ornament.

The planking (carvel-built) joined together fore and aft to the stem and stern pieces.
