Handlist description: Robe of tapestry woven linen fabric

Card/Transcription No.: 367i-1

367, I A ROBE (TAPESTRY-WOVEN FABRIC)

I. A robe of tapestry-woven linen fabric, having inwrought ornament in different colours (only blue and red are now distinguishable). For details of ornament see diagrams of back and front attached. Possibly the weaving has been supplemented by fine stitches (needlework). On bottom long fringe (? formed by the ends of warp threads) - i.e., selvage.

<> 82.0 approx. 125.0 approx.

The fabric with inwrought ornament was apparently woven in one piece; a special opening left for the neck. It was then folded in two so that the end selvages (fringes) met, and hemmed at the sides, leaving the necessary openings for the arms.

The robe had been crumpled up and cast into the box; with a result it has suffered badly; creased; much darkened; most of it in parlous condition; some parts completely oxidized; the ornament only partially visible where better preserved; the colours almost impossible to define - except here and there red & blue. With difficulty it was unravelled. Treated with duroprene dissolved in xylol.
