397. A PAIR OF SANDALS (MARQUETRY VENEER).

POSITION: One of the sandals lying under basket 365 (see photos 1137, 1138 and 1139) but not visible in photos; the other sandal lying under basket 427 (see photos 1138, 1139 and 1140) also not visible in photos. DIMENSIONS: Max. L. 28.4; Max. W. 9.2, cents.

DESCRIPTION: Of wood; covered with a marquetry veneer of bark, green leather, and gold foil; upon a stucco ground. The soles of white stucco. The device: - An African and Asiatic foe bound with lotus and papyrus = under the arch of the foot. Under the toes four bows, and under the heel four bows. Around the sides a double border of strips of light coloured bark, green leather, and diamond shaped ornament of gold-foil. Edges of soles bound with bark. Straps over instep of bark ornamented with gold-foil diaper pattern. Long central strap of green-leather, bark and gold-foil alternate.

REMARKS: One of the sandals is slightly damaged & has been stained by liquid leather that has melted upon it.
