466. BEDSTEAD (COVERED WITH SHEET-GOLD) 1

POSITION: Lying on its side, across northern end of chamber, on the top of miscellanea (see photos Nos. 1145, 1144, 1142). DIMENSIONS: Max. L. 1.75; Max. W. 83.5 (in head-end front); Max. W. 82.4 (back front end); Height of foot-panel (above bed) 30.0 cents. Max. H. (from ground) 69.0 cents.

DESCRIPTION: Wooden bedstead: the frame work, foot-panel, legs, stretchers and angle pieces, completely covered with sheet-gold of approx. 0.40 cents in thickness; has pleated mesh of linen thread of eight strands (see photo); has four legs of feline form; between fore-legs at head end and hind-legs at foot-end (i.e. panel end) a stretcher and angle support; the stretchers are plain cylindrical bars having ends of umbelliferous form; the angle supports are semi-oval <> and are ribbed (transversely) suggesting binding similar to the case in wicker-work construction. Gold sheeting fixed by means of small nails <> and certainly in some cases by glue on thin coating of gesso, but it is difficult to say to what extent the gold sheeting being (excepting buckling from shrinkage of the wood) in good condition. The upright foot-panel is supported by an angle-piece of the following form: -
