271, A. A SQUARE BASKET

L. 23.5, W. 23.5, H. 13.0 cms.

A rectangular basket made of papyrus pith, having the interior lined with linen. The flat lid was hinged with cord and originally sealed with a clay seal. (device: lions rampant).

Upon the lid a picture painted on papyrus and gilt, representing the king kneeling on a Neb-sign before the god Amon-Re, behind the king the god Re-Herakhty.

Upon the front of the basket a picture painted on papyrus and gilt representing the king kneeling upon a Neb-sign before the god Ptah, behind the king the goddess Sekhmet.

The basket was probably for writing material.
