335. BOW-CASE 1

POSITION: - Leant against the N.W. corner of the chamber; the lid open and a portion of one of the bows protruding.

DIMENSIONS: - L. overall 153; Max. W. 25; thickness 7. cents.

DESCRIPTION: - A charioteer's bow-case; of wood; with copper staples for fastening the case to the chariot. The case is made of thin light wood; covered with linen; and decorated with sporting and allegorical scenes bordered with hieroglyphic text, garland, diaper and palmette patterns; the tapering ends terminating with violet faience heads of cheetahs with gilded manes. The top half of the straight front side is made to open and close, by being swung on copper-wire-hinges, and has small copper staples for fastening with cord. DECORATION: - Obverse - central panel - in embossed gold. The king in his chariot, hunting with bow and arrow oryx and hartebeast, is accompanied by his two slughi hounds, which attack the quarry.
