shop. Work-basket. Dr Worthington.

covered Temple steps up to ramp.

W. up near Colossi & brought her home. Cold.

H & I & Mr Peek in bus to Luxor after
lunch. Also F. as far as river. To
Pohoomul about jacket. H & I walked
to the cemetery to see about T. A’s grave.
Walked back as far as native Tribu-
nal. Met Mrs L. & Mrs W. at Hotel, also
Mr Peek & Frances & all back together. Mr
Cline, Miss W. & Barbara waiting in bus.
Cold day & windy. 62°. The Ls & Ws
lunched with Mr Hyde on the Khonsu.

Mr Hyde & Mr & Mrs Byne to lunch. They
had tea with the Davieses. Walk with Mrs
L. & to Davieses after. Fire in dining
room for dinner & we all sat there
afterwards. Cold day 62°.

who stayed to tea. (Director Gen. of Cairo
Water Works). Mr Whittemore in morn.
at breakfast time. After tea with Mrs & Mr
L. to Temple. Met Mrs D. & Miss Moss there.

Sitting in tent sewing between lunch & tea
Mr Whittemore in for a short time after
lunch. Mrs Davies & Miss Moss to tea &

After lunch Princess Bessima Fouad
& her companion Miss Davison & her
niece Miss Green. They stayed to tea. Later

Windstorm in night. After tea H. took a
photograph-group of us all. Walk with
Mr & Mrs L. & H. round cultivation.

H. & I in bus to Luxor. Miss W. with us
to river. Lunched with Mrs Armstrong.
Met Mr & Mrs Bret Young & Dr Munthe
(Physician to Queen of Sweden). After
lunch Baroness Szilassy, Mrs
Mond & her niece. To Pohoomul &
tried on jacket, bought string of tur-
quoises. Back for tea. Mrs L, Mrs W.
& Frances in bus to meet us. Walk after
tea with Mr & Mrs L. At dinner felt
the Col. had gone. Cold wind. Mr
Carter arrived yesterday & was here while
we were out.

to lunch, but she seedy. Cloudy & overcast.
In afternoon, to tea, Mr & Mme Merzbach & Mr
Carter. Dr & Mrs Morton Howell called.
Mr Harkness’ birthday. Mr L. sent cable
yesterday. We had a fantasia in aft.
Gufti band. Mahomed Saïd’s little girl
danced. Naboul fighting. Mrs Davies &
Miss Moss over. Walk after alone.

Mr & Mrs Garfield & Miss G. to lunch &
tea. Walk after with Mrs L. More
music & single-stick fighting. H & I
dined with the Davieses. Miss Moss
& Mr Wilkinson. Mr Garfield is
President of Williams, & the son of
President (of the U.S.A.) Garfield who
was murdered.

Mr Lythgoe arrived back from Cairo.

Bitterly cold wind & dust.

H & I to Luxor. Miss W. & F. in bus to
river. To walking-stick man. Met
the Brett Youngs & photographed them.
Hampden’s, Gaddis etc. Lunched with
Mrs Armstrong. Talking to Mrs Fowler
& Mrs Mond who gave me lots of
flowers & vegetables. Mrs Lythgoe & Mrs
W. came over after lunch & we all went

Also Mrsiss Dalton (fiancée of Mrs W’s

Bad night with cough. After lunch

& went over to the Valley immediately to
see Tut ankh amen. H & I, Mrs W. Frances
Mr Peek to Luxor after lunch. H. to
Savoy to call on Miss Littell etc. I to
Mrs Armstrong & got Dr Worthington to
overhaul me. All right. Cough still
tiresome. With Mrs A. to Luxor Hotel
& H. later & tea with the Brett Youngs.
Talking to Mrs Newberry & Miss Moss,

Lady Sybil, Mr Lubbock, Dr Munthe,

bacteriologist & discoverer of germ &
serum for infant paralysis. Head of

after lunch, & in morning to Tombs of

Mr & Mrs Church Osborne arrived. H

to cemetery. Talking to Mrs Newberry. They
are taking him down to Cairo tonight
(stretcher to station). Fever for 10 days &
Dr W. thinks paratyphoid on top of
bronchitis & slight congestion of the lungs.
Tea with Mrs Armstrong & Miss Le Manach.
Dr W. to see Mr Cline. Normal. Walters
(of Times) here to tea & others while we
were away.

H. to Valley to work on objects at Seti
II - laboratory. Back after lunch. Mr
& Miss Wiborg to tea. Afterwards they went
to river in bus with the Winlocks, Mr
Hauser, Mr Peek & Mr Wilkinson who
are all off to Kharga. Mr Cline still
in his room though all right. Only
the Lythgoes, Church Osbornes & ourselves
& Miss Willis at dinner.

H. to Valley in morning. Back for tea
walking. Walk with him by cultivation after.
Mr Cline appeared normally. Mr Lythgoe
left for Cairo from here at 5. The Church
Osbornes left after lunch. Only H. Mrs
L. Miss W. & I, & Mr Cline for dinner.
Mrs Davies & Moss after to play Bridge
with Mrs L. & Miss Willis.

Mr & Mrs Lansing & Mr Howe arrived in
morning. H. to Valley, & back for tea.
Mr Baring to lunch. Afterwer tea at 4
Mr B., the Lansings, children Miss W. & I
in bus to river bank, dropping the Ls
at Medinet Habu & picking them up on
the way back, & leaving them again at
Der el Bahari. Walk round cultivation
with H.

The Lansings left very early to catch the
9.15 A.M. train to Asswan. H. to
Valley.

Lady Sybil & Mr Lubbock arrived at
10.30 A.M. & stayed until 5 P.M. she
resting on my bed most of the time.
Mr Cline went over to Luxor after lunch
to leave for. Kharga tomorrow.

H. went over to Luxor with Miss Moss at
7.45 A.M. to movie the Festival of Abul
Hagag. Frances, Mr Howe & I followed
at 10.30. Miss W. & Barbara to river with
us. Met Miss Moss in Hotel & then to
Luxor Hotel where we found Harry & had
drinks. All of us to Luxor Temple where
Mr Lubbock joined us. Mr Mond etc.
Back to Luxor Hotel with Mr L. for lunch.
H. couldn’t come, & Lady Sybil laid up
with bad headache. Back to Temple
after lunch & saw the Procession.
Rather interesting survival of the
Barque of Amon. First gaily dressed
camels & riders, most elaborately got up,
then procession of donkeys, then Sheikhs
& banners, more camels with “howdahs”
rather like mahmal, & then 2 boats
on carts, the boats full of children.
The “howdahs” - covered - had boys inside
singing. Great crowds, drums, dust
& heat. H. got back to Winter Palace
at 3 & had some sandwiches etc. &
I went up to see Mrs Armstrong who was
in great distress. Had had news from Hertford
that her eldest grandson (7) had been
run over by a motor, & pelvis bone
& arm broken. No internal injuries.
Mrs Mond there. Afterwards in lounge
Dr Worthington, Mrs Scott, Mc Cormicks,
Kimballs, Holdens. Breasteds & Nelsons.. Miss Moss, Frances
Mr Howe & we back at 4.30 to bank
& found Mr Cline in bus, who had
had wire from Kharga not to come.
Bad weather & short supplies. Headache.

H. to Valley. No day of rest this week!
Lord Exmouth to breakfast. Lovely
clear day after 3 days of Khamseen.
A party of Davidsons & Le Braz to tea
also Sir Hesketh Bell. H. & I for walk
by Temple. The Lansings returned
from Aswan. Mr Cline & Mr Howe
to Luxor for the night & to go to Edfu
tomorrow.

Miss Willis laid up with sore throat
& fever. Looking after her all day.
To river in bus at 4.30 to meet Mr Cline.
Mr Howe stayed at Edfu. The Breasteds &
Nelsons here after tea. No walk. Harry gave
us a movie show after dinner with Mr
Harkness’s new projector. Unwrapping
mummies (H’s film) & Nile banks, taken
last year on the Chonsu by Mr Lythgoe.
Mrs L. slept in Winlock’s room.

Tending Miss Willis all day. Dr & Mrs
Morton Howell to lunch. Mr Cline went
to Luxor with them & brought backsent Dr
Worthington who stayed to tea. H & I
for walk by cultivation. Met the bus
bringing back the Winlocks & Mr
Peek from Kharga, Mr Howe from Edfu
& Mr Cline from Luxor. Mr Carter &
Mr Lucas came after tea & stayed until
latish. The children sat up to dinner,
& we had the movie after. Miss W.
normal. H back early from Valley.

Very hot windy & khamseeny. To Mrs

the Breasteds. Mrs D. & Miss Moss came
later & picked us up. Mr W. in bed

To Luxor at 10.30. With Mrs Armstrong for
lunch & tea. Talking to Crosbys, Porters,
Baroness Szilassy & Dr W. To chemists’
& Chellaram & paid them. To visit Mrs
Scott & Mrs Mond. Back at 5 with Mr
Davies, Mr Hauser & Mr Wilkinson back
from Kharga. Prof. Steindorf here for lunch
Very hot 100°.

Slightly over 100°. Walk with H.

95°, but felt hotter than yesterday. In
morning Mr & Mrs Douglas & 2 daughters
(friends of the Harkness’s) called, & also
Mr Peek came back for half an hour &
brought his friend Miss Wood. Dr Breasted
& the Nelsons to dinner. Mrs B. laid up
with flu! Walk round Temple with H.
after tea. Movie of Mr W. & mummy
after dinner.

Very hot. 96°. Heavy sultry. Walk
with H. by cultivation & on hill. The
Winlocks to Mr Carter. Mr Peek back
in evg.

to walk after tea, but impossible. Thick
yellow like bad London fog.

We left Qurneh at a little after 3 for
Luxor. Very hot. Drove to cemetery.
Tea with Mrs Scott, & left by the 6 P.M.
train. I had no dinner.

Arrived 7.30 A.M. up to time, to

Mr Wainwright before lunch. At 4.30
to Miss Latley’s & with her to Sporting Club
where we had tea. Then walked back over
Kasr el Nil bridge where she took tram &
we drove. Balchin before dinner with
roses. Bed early very tired.

H & I in car with movie camera. Called
for Mr Wainwright at 4 Charia Wabour
el Maza & to Pyramids, Sphinx etc.
H. taking movies: 2 camera boys from
Lisht. To the Reisner Camp to call on
the Rowes. Mr W. back to lunch
with us & stayed until 4. Miss Latley
at 4.15 & in car to Mr Farnall’s
for tea. The Quibells, Ponsos, Lansings,
Mr Phillips etc. etc. H. & I with Mrs
Phillips & Katharine to Mr Humphries
at Boulac Dacrour. Lady Oakes. Dr
Steele, Major & Mrs Douglas Hamilton,
Mrs Taylor, Mrsr Marchmont etc. Garden
lovely. Mrs P. brought us back, & she &
Katharine dined with us. Afterwards

Two calm & lovely days at sea. A little
rough last night. Arr. Messina 3.10 P.M.
& H. & I ashore. Drove out to Campo
Santo - fine view - & round the town
& to see remains of Duomo & Sta Maria
Catalana. Left at 8 P.M.

motored (Attilio’s car) to tea with

I stayed in to let the servants go to
see the San Giovanni fireworks.

We dined at 7 P.M. Left house at
8.30. & left Florence at 9 P.M.
Sleepers. Very hot & not much sleep.

Arrived Milan 6.30 A.M. breakfast
at buffet & then walked into town
to see Duomo & drove to Castello &
back to station. Slipped & fell &on
platform & hurt my foot. Rheuma-
tism & indigestion! Left Milan
9.30 A.M. Arr Brigue 2.30.
Simplon & Lötschberg. Lovely.
Mr Skipwith in carriage with us.
Arr. Interlaken 4.50. To Hotel
de l’Europe. Also Mr S. Didn’t like
it. So out to tea & looked for
another Hotel. Back for dinner
Mr S. with us. Spent the night at
the Europe.

Moved to the Savoy after breakfast.
To the Tivoli for tea & walked to
Lake Brienz along the Aare. Rheumatism
bad. After dinner to Kursaal. Rained
off & on all day.

Swiss Nat. Fête. Brilliant day. In
morning we walked along canal towards
Lake Thun. Limping badly. & hurt.
After lunch by boat to Brienz.
Walked through town & back by See-
Promenade. & took the boat back.

Poured all day & bitterly cold. Out a
little in morning with H. & after
lunch to see the Nibelungens at
the cinema.

Lovely day. H & I walked to Lake
Thun along the river bank in
morning. And took the steamer after
lunch to Opberbozen where we had
tea at the Moy with Mrs Mason
Jones & Mrs Crowninshield. Paysons.
Back by tram.

Eleven years since war was
declared. Left at 10.45 A.M. for
Lauterbrunnen & from there in motor
car to Trümmelbackh Falls. Wonderful
sight. Back to Lauterbrunnen &
lunch there, then by funicular to
the Grütsch Alp & walked from
there to Mürren. Lovely walk.
Back all the way by train to Lauterb.
& tea at the Station Restaurant. Rained
while between. Grütsch & Mürren.

Not out in morning. After lunch
walked with H. alongside Brienzersee
to Iseltwald. 7 miles. Tea there &
back by boat. After dinner to Kursaal
showery.

Out with H. in morning. After
lunch H. walked up the Rugenhohe
& back for me to tea at the Kursaal
met the Bartletts there. To Kursaal
again after dinner for fireworks.
My rheumatism pretty bad all day
& slept after lunch.

We left by the 8.35 A.M. for Freiibourg
& arrived at 11 A.M. Walked down
through the town to St. Nicholas.
Over the great new bridge to the other
side of the Sarine & then up the road
& over the suspension bridge across
the ravine. Then back by tram to
the station & had lunch at the
Continental Restaurant. Left at 1.20
P.M. for Berne. Drove down to the
Bär Garten. Saw some cubs etc.
Drove to the Münster, & then walked
back up the main street by the Zeit-
glockenturm. To the Kursaal for
tea on terrace overlooking the Aare.
Bought some brise-bise. Left Berne
at 4.55 P.M. & arr. Interlaken
6.55. Very hot day. No view at
Berne ats distance hazy.

walk along riverside. Left at
1.45 for Gründelwald. To call on
the Pughes at the Belvedere, but out.
Walked through the village & had tea
at the Bär & left 4.40. (arr.
there at 3.10.) Very hot day.

H. went off after breakfast & climbed
the Abendberg. Got back at
2.20 P.M. We had tea at Confis-
erie des Alpes & then walked
to the Wildgarten & back by the
river bank. Very hot. Over 80°.

Not out in morning. Writing letters.
H & I took 1.45 train from Ost-
Bahnhof for Schynige Platte. Changed
at Wylderswil. Lovely day & gorgeous
views from top. Walked to the Daube
& had tea at the Hotel at Schynige.
Left at 4.34 & got back at 5.50.

Walk with H. in morning to Unter-
seen to Kloster & pottered about.
Poured later & all the aft. Should
have gone to tea with Mrs Mason Jones
at Oberhofen, but weather too bad. To
Kursaal to tea in floods of rain. Cleared
later & we walked back by Ost Bahnhof
& Wilderswil road.

H. walked to Iseltwald alone in morn.
After lunch we went by boat to Beatenhöhle
& walked through the caves. Very wonder-
ful. Heard an old man playing on an
Alpine horn. Tea there & for a walk
along the Thun road, then back by
tram. To Kursaal after dinner.

With H. to Mersmann’s & pottered
about in morning. After lunch we
took 1.40 boat to Iseltwald & walked
from there by footpath through the
woods to Giessbackh to the Falls. Lovely
walk. Tea at the big hotel, & home
by boat.

We left by the 8.15 A.M. train for
the Jungfraujoch. Arr. 11.45.
Brilliantly fine. Wonderful trip.
Went as far as Eismeer 20 years
ago with M. & P. The rest of the
way to the Joch not then finished.
We got out & walked about in the
snow. Left at 12.30 & eat our sand-
wiches in the train. Went back by
Grindelwald (arr. 3) & had tea with
Mrs & Miss Pughe at the Belvedere. Left
at 4.45 P.M. & arr. here at 5.50.

Mersmanns in morning. After
lunch steamer to Beatenbucht & up
in funicular. Then walked to
Regina Hotel (about 3½ miles) &
tea there, then down through the woods
about 9 miles in all. Arr here 7.30.

H alone to Beatenberg & walked
to Regina Hotel, then Amisbuhl &
down here. Tea at Confiserie des
Alpes.

We took the 10.29 A.M. train to
Meiringen, then tram to the mouth
of the Aareschlucht & walked through
the Gorge. Wonderful. Then back
part of the way & up the Finstere
Schlucht to the Lammi Gasthaus
at the top, where we ate our sandwiches.
Back down the Finstere & along the
Aareschlucht to the tram, then up in
the funicular to the Reichenbach falls.
Gorgeous & impressive. Left Meir-
ingen at 4.30 in train to Brienz
Then boat to Interlaken. Tea on board.
Back at 6 P.M.

Shopping with H. in morning. Bought
2 Unterlage for Eimer. At 3
we went up the Harder by funicular.
Very steep! Meant to have walked
down after tea, but thunderstorm
& floods of rain, so down in funicular.

Packing all morning. Tea at the
Confiserie des Alpes & then walked along
river to Unterseen. Rained a little.

Left Interlaken at 9.34 A.M. Ost.
Cloudy. Over the Brünig Pass from
Meiringen & along Lakes of Sarnen
& Lunzern & Alpnach to Lucerne.
Lovely trip. Lunched at the buffet
at Lucerne Station & on to
Zug. Fine most of the way, but pouring
when we got to Zug & all aft. Arr.
2.45 & to Hotel Löwe on the Lake.
No bus & no cabs, so in tram. Tea
at a Confiserie & then walked about
the town in floods of rain. Zeit thurm,
& Gothic church of St. Oswald. &
aviary. Dined in Hotel (one other
woman) & bed early.

Got up at 6.30. A.M. Walked to station
at got 9.4 A.M. on. Arr. Chur at
17.35. Came by Zürich (lake),
Thalwil, Weesen, along Walensee
to Flims & Seezthal & along
Rhine to Chur. Lovely. Lunched
at buffet at Chur, & train on to St.
Moritz by the Raetien bahn (Albula
line) Wonderful scenery & engineering.
Arrived St. Moritz 2.45. P.M. & to
Hotel Schweizerhof. Tea in town &
walked about.

lunch we walked to Silvaplana.
Poured most of the way there & back.
Tea there. Cinema in Hotel after
dinner. The climbing of the Giulia del
Diavolo. Terrifying feats.

We walked up by Ober Alpina to
Alp Giop in morning. Out for tea
& then H. for a walk by himself. Dull
or rainy day. & very cold.

After lunch we walked up to
Hahnen See. & had tea there. A
little rain.

In morning we walked to Campfer
& Lej Nair through the woods. Train
up from Bad. After lunch to
Maloja. H. walked as far as Sils
Maria. We had a carriage. Tea
at the Kuhn, & looked at the
Chiavenna road & up to the
Schloss Belvédère. Perfect day. I
had a bad fall.

We left at 8.20 A.M. in Post
motor diligence & over the Julier
Pass to Tiefencastleel. Arr 11 o’clock
Left our wraps at the station & then
walked to Thusis by the Schyn
Gorge. Picnic lunch. About 9
miles. Tea at Thusis station &
train back. Left 4.13. Picked up
wraps at Tiefencastel & arr. St.
Moritz at 7. Lovely day.

Bernina Bahn. Carriage to ourselves as far
as Tirano. Lovely day & wonderful views

No trouble with Customs at Tirano.
Change there. Boiling hot. Started an
hour late & awful confusion. Crowded
train. Arrived Milan 2 hours late at
7. &To the Hotel du Nord. Cleaned up &
had dinner out of doors. Started at 10.30
o’clock in sleeping car for Florence.
Young Cumming with us in Bernina
train.

Arr. up to time 7.30 A.M. after good
night. Fearfully hot. No baggage.
House upside down as workpeople
only finished yesterday. Working hard

Out after tea with H. & left my jewel
case at Bank. Palagi, facchino &
then to see Giulia about telephone. Ada
dined here.

We heard the fascisti last night had
made a raid on Avv. Bosi (who
shares the same floor with Mr
Procter in Via Tornabuoni) & shot
him dead & burnt out his rooms. One fascista killed.
Also a maglieria in Por Santa
Maria, which we saw. To Station
with H. to see him off by the 1.25
train to Rome. Ada there. Walked back
by Via Tornabuoni. Very hot. I dined
with Ada. Streets deserted on way
home at 10, & military patrols.

Quiet night. In morning to P.O. & round
by Via Strozzi. Botti’s shop had been
attacked. One shutter down & burnt, other-
wise all right. To Mr Procter’s & looked
in a Bosi’s room. Everything destroyed.
Mr P. says about ₤10,000 worth of damage.
Bosi himself not killed (it was
some other lawyer) & he is in hospital
as the result of the beating he got
some time ago. A Fascista was
murdered on Sat. night (Giovanni
Luporini) & everything that has happened
since have been reprisals. Canon
Knollys, Mrs Hayes-Sadlin & Miss
Bramly at Mr P’s. Then to Bank
& on to Boni. Very hot. Antinori’s
man. Showed him receipt. Aft. watching
the funeral procession of Luporini from
Fascisti headquarters. Took an hour &
a half to pass. Lovely wreaths. After tea
tidying H’s wall cupboard & shelves
between dining room & guarda roba.

yellow ones for Mrs Newman’s grave.
A great many people there & the graves
looked lovely. I put 2 pots of pink
chrysanthemums on the grave also. Took

gether. She & Miss Tweedie & Mme

The Cyril Barkers in my carriage
from the time we got up till we
arrived at Brindisi 11.15 a.m.
Raining. They introduced me to Ziwar
Pasha. After passports visaed on
boat “Helouan” for lunch. Sat
with the Barkers & the Stanley Gordons.
Found on board the Winlocks, Miss Bow-
ditch (Mrs W’s friend) Miss Perry (new gover-
ness) & Mr Weyre (new young man on Ex.)
also Barbara Phillips, Sir R. & Lady Oakes,
Sir Horace & Lady Pinching & 2 girls, Mr
Murray Graham Signor Adamoli etc. &King Feisal
also on board. Cinema after dinner
calm. Single cabin on 3rd deck

Began to get roughish after Crete.
Movie in salon after dinner
(Fiddles on tables) & boat gave tre-
mendous lurch. Furniture & people
capsized & Coptic Patriarch nose
dived into the screen.

Barbara’s birthday. Gave her an
Italian doll. To Bank in morning &
saw Mustacchi. After lunch Mrs
Pembroke & I drove out to the War
Graves Cemetery for the Armistice
Service. High Com. & Lady Ll. there. Spoke
to Sir Ronald Storrs & he introduced me
to Lady S. On to see Mrs Phillips.
Mrs Pembroke came also. Tea there.
Mr Bolland came in & Dr Maclaren
(lady).Then to Evagoras &
Greek shoemaker. After dinner
with Pembrokes.

Washed my hair in morning.
Tea with the Russells. Stayed late.
& went over house. Talking about
possible correspondent for Morning
Post. Mr Allen asked me to find one
for him. Davieses arrived.

Col. Mackintosh came to see me in
morning about the M.P. job. He was
in the R.A.F. during the war, & then
Arab Bureau. Wrote to Mr Allen about
him. Eton & Oxford & Mrs M. was a
Labouchère. Saw Major Gayer-Anderson
Mrs Pembroke & I shared a car & went
out to Mena to tea with Mrs Gunn.
A Russian sister & brother there -
? Stanislavski. The Breasteds, père
et fils lunched with the Winlocks.
Dined with the Howells, American Legation.
Went with the Winlocks. Crabites
there, also Reisners & Watsons.

Mr Winship in in morning. Mrs
Winlock & I back in his car to see
Mrs Winship. Then to Lawrence &
Mayo. In aft. Mrs Winlock & I
to call on the Howells. Mrs & Mary
Reisner there & Miss Crowley. We
all left the Hotel at 6 & got the
7 P.M. to Luxor. I dined at table
with Miss Perry, Miss Bowditch &
Mr Weyre. Shared sleeper with
Miss Bowditch.

Arr. ½ hour late. Breakfast at
Winter Palace with the others. Then
to Gurna. Walked to meet Harry
at 4. Found him looking very ill.

H & I to Luxor in bus after lunch.
Also Mrs W. Miss Bowditch & Frances. Met
Mr Carter, Lucas & Dr Hall. Back for tea.

Dr Hall here in morning & again for
tea. After lunch Mrs W. Miss B. & I walked
to the top of the hill & round at back.
“Thanksgiving Day”. The children came
to dinner. The Davieses in after.

Mr Lucas. The others went for a moonlight
drive to Medinet Habu. The Winlocks dined
at the Davieses. Also Miss Bowditch.

After lunch to river in Nedbert with Miss
B. & Miss P. & back alone, with Hamid.
Walk with H. by cultivation after tea. Lovely
moonrise. Irene to tea with children.

Mr Carter & Mr Lucas at tea-time. H & I
walked to Temple to see Thotmes III on 4th
inner pillar in birth colonnade with diadem
like Tutankhamen’s. Then round by
cultivation. Moonrise, Venus & Jupiter.

We all (Winlocks, Frances & Barbara, Miss
Perry, Miss Bowditch, Davieses, Mr Weyer
& Mr Hauser & Mr Wilkinson) went over
to the Valley to No. 15 & Mr Carter showed
us the Tutankhamen jewels – masses &
masses of them, most exquisite inlaid
things, & rings, gold plaques in the
shape of spread-winged vultures, inlaid
bracelets & amulets. A lovely perfume
box in gold & inlay on polished iron
base, & 2 gorgeous daggers in sheathes,
one with crystal stopper handle &
polished iron blade, very sharp. Also
the gold & inlaid maksk, so like
Akhnaton, in the gold coffin. Also
the wonderful gold coffin lid, & the
inlaid second coffin, as well as the
first we had already seen. We saw
a hand of the mummy with the rings
on & gold finger stalls, & the head
of the king, very small & well-
preserved, lacking nose. After a lengthy
stay in No. 15 we went to the Tomb & saw
the sarcophagus again, & Mr C. opened
the door of the store chamber so that we
could look in & see the Anubis & the
Canopic chest. After tea with H. by cult.

Mr Callender arrived in morning. Also
Chief inspector of police about the guard
who absconded with the pay of Mickey’s
father. Mr C. for walk with H & me after
tea by cultivation. Mr W. went to tea at
Mr Carter’s. Dr Hall to lunch on his
way down from Aswan.

Mr Callender left at 2. Mrs W. Miss B. H. &
I in car with him to river. Miss B. H &
I for walk by cultivation.

Mr Horn called with introduction from
Mrs Gunn - after lunch. Miss Perry laid
up & looking after her. For a drive
to Tombs of the Queens before tea with Mr
& Mrs W. & Harry. Hot & heavy. Walk after
to Temple with H.

Miss P. better. Made her ovaltine. The Ws to
Luxor in morning. Walk with H. by cultivation
Arrowroot for Miss P. & Horlick in evg.


Shabaan Effendi in morning. Started at 2
in bus for Luxor, H. the Davieses & Miss B &
Mr Weyer. The Davieses went in boat by
themselves. H & I drove out to cemetery to
see T. Allan’s grave. Then to new photo stores
& Hamptons, & Hotel where I talked to Mr
Lucas & Dr Worthington. Miss Perry better,
but made her arrowroot & Horlick at night.

Frances’ 12th birthday. Gave her a doll.
Mr Carter & MrLucas at tea time. H & I for
walk by cultivation. Cold. Frances & Barbara

In car with Mrs W. & Miss B. after lunch to
Tombs of Queens. Home from there, & they got
out at Ramesseum to sketch. Walk with H.
after tea round cult. Headache all day.

Walk with H. by cult. Mr Carter & Mr Lucas
to dinner. Headache.

Dr Ranke to lunch. Prof. of Egyptology at
Heidelberg. Walk with H. by Temple.

Miss Perry, H & I to Luxor at 2. The Davieses
part of the way, & Mrs W. & the children to the
river. To Hampton’s, Gaddis & Chekaram, &
into the village to buy bowls. Back to W.P.
Hotel & saw Dr Munthe. To Luxor to ask
about Mrs Armstrong.

After lunch with H. in bus & movie camera
along Sheikh Amran’s Ghissa to do a
water wheel. Mrs W. & Miss B. came too to
sketch. Walk after tea with H. by Temple.

Mrs W. Miss B. & I to Luxor at 11 in bus.
Mrs W. & I to Luxor Hotel to Mrs Armstrong
who arrived yesterday. Lunched with her.
Mrs Mond also. Sat in garden after also Dr
Munthe.Then to W.P. Hotel where we had
tea with Mrs Mond. Mr Mond & Miss Le
Manach also. Talking Dr Worthington.
Noticed in morning that my heart was
missing a beat every now & again.
Back in Nedbert. Mrs W. drove. Miss
B. lunched by herself at W.P. & joined us
for tea. Mr Wilson lunched here.

Mr Carter & Mr Lucas at tea time. Walk
with H. by cultivation, Back alone.

Dr & Mrs Nelson, Miss Wells (governess) & Irene
to tea. H & I to cultivation.

Mrs Armstrong to lunch. To river with
her in Nedbert at 4.15. Cold. Saw Colonel
Matheson riding & ? Col. Parker in carriage
Walk with H. Temple after tea.

Mr W. to Luxor for lunch. Walk with H.

H & I, Mrs W. & Miss B. to Luxor to lunch with
the Monds. Mrs W. & Miss B. went on ahead
early to go to Karnac, & Mrs W. & Miss B. W. drove us
in Nedbert with the children to the river.
To Pohoomull & got abaya for Irene.
After lunch to Hampton etc & into village
to get bowls. Back through gardens. Mrs
Armstrong moved to W.P. yesterday.
Later with her & Mr Carter, Mr Lucas &
Mrs Davies. Bought linen baskets.
Back at 4.30 with Mrs W. Miss B. &
Mrs D. Large Xmas mail on 23rd.

After tea Mr W. drove H. & me as far
as well near Mr Carter’s & we walked
back along edge of cultivation.

Dr Phillips turned up at tea time & brought
Mr & Mrs & Miss Hadow. Mr & Mrs Dodge also
to tea. Relaying bricks in dining room. Mess.
Afterwards Mr W. drove us in Nedbert to
the Nelsons. We walked back.

In morning H, Miss P. & Frances walked
up the Gurn. I with them to top of Goat
Track & along cliffs, then back alone.
Fearfully hot & couldn’t climb. After lunch
preparing Xmas tree etc. The Nelsons,
Herr Bolicher & Mr Lucas to tea, & the
latter stayed on to dinner. I gave F &
Barbara, pink & blue shot taffetas, &
pink silk alpaca respectively, both
embroidered by Luisa & made by Beppina.
Gave Miss Perry a string of mummy
beads & coral. Harry gave me a
lovely long string of turquoise matrix
graduated beads. Mrs Armstrong
gave me a lovely pink silk pin-
cushion beautifully embroidered with
tall holleyhocks & lower flowers.
Pleasant day.

Mrs Armstrong to lunch. With her, Mrs
W., & Frances in Nedbert to Tombs of the
Kings & Mrs W., F. & I walked back
over the cliffs. After tea Mr W. took
H & me & Mrs W. in Nedbert for a
drive round the ghissas. H. at
Valley from 8 a.m. & got back at 4.30.

H at Valley. Back at 5. Mrs W. Miss B &
I started about 5 & climbed cliffs & walked
along the top by setting sun & moonlight
& down by French digs & Der el Medina.
Harry joined us by French digs. The Davieses
in after dinner. Got back yesterday from
El Kab where they had been spending
Xmas with Mr Somers Clarke.

H. back from Valley for lunch. After, I
Mr & Mrs W. Miss B. to Luxor. Tea with Miss
Lattey. Mackintoshs.

Mr Callender arrived in morning. Mr
& Mrs Charles Mackintosh to lunch. Harry
at Valley. After to river with Mr Callender.
Walk with H. after.

H. to Valley. After lunch with Miss B. & Miss
P. to Luxor in Nedbert. To Cook’s & got ticket
& went on board the Egypt to see Miss B’s
cabin. Tutankhamen stores etc & to Hotel
Said goodbye to Mr Lucas. He & Mr
Carter going to Cairo by tonight’s train
in service car with armed guard,
taking the gold coffin & mask down
to the Museum. Back for tea &
walk round Temple with H. & to the
Davieses. My birthday. H. gave me chocolates.
