Obituaries

Irène Clère

Madame Irène Clère died on 7 October, 2008. Madame Clère left the very extensive collections of papers of her late husband, J. J. Clère, the former Directeur d'Etudes at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris, to the Archive of the Griffith Institute. She was a great lady who will be much missed by all who knew her.

Sarah Israelit-Groll

Sarah Israelit Groll, Professor Egyptology at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, died on 16 December, 2007. Sarah used to be a regular visitor to Oxford and the Griffith Institute published her Non-verbal sentence patterns in Late Egyptian in 1967. She was a genuine friend to many of us and will be much missed.

Alessandra Nibbi

Alessandra Nibbi, the founder and Editor of Discussions in Egyptology, died in Oxford on 15 January, 2007. She will be remembered for her work on the relations between Egypt and the outside world and as a passionate and courageous champion of the exploration of the Delta. John Ross

It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of John Ross, an outstanding photographer of ancient Egyptian monuments, in Oxford on 6 December, 2006.

Naomi Sargant

Naomi Sargant (b. December 10, 1933), the former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Open University, Senior Commissioning Editor for educational programmes on Channel 4 and Labour Councillor representing Finsbury Park, died on July 23, 2006. She was Professor Cerný's stepdaughter and was very helpful when Cerný's papers were presented to the Archive of the Griffith Institute. She is a great loss to the academic community.

Dr Colin Walters

We are sorry to record the death of the Coptologist, Dr Colin Walters (b. July 9, 1936, d. April 24, 2006). Colin was a a former Lady Wallis Budge Fellow at University College, Oxford and was most often to be found in the small Coptic Reading Room on the 3rd floor of the old Griffith Institute. He will be sadly missed.
